Bowlers vs. Golfers 2011
BOWLS SECTION

This annual match in aid of the Captain's Charity took place during the afternoon and early evening of Wednesday 29th June, commencing at 4.00 p.m. This year the format was changed to include both bowls and putting competitions, followed by a dinner in the clubhouse.

For the bowls phase six pairs from each team played matches of nine ends, following which a second series of six matches took place to allow the few members of each team who had not played in the first round to have a chance to play. In total ten bowlers played two matches and four played only one, while nine golfers played twice and six only played once. The bowlers won this phase of the competition by eleven match to one, a total of 112 shots to 50 in conventional bowls scoring - the golfers' success coming from the pairing of the Chairman of the Management Committee, Peter Beardsley, and a former Captain of the Golf Club (and now a stalwart of the Bowls Section!), John Weselby. Some pictures taken during the bowling matches can be seen here.

The putting phase of the match then followed, with twelve players from each team playing match-play over nine holes. Although the bowlers started well when John Barson halved his match, the golfers held their collective nerves to win the remaining eleven matches - three only by a single hole - so that the result of this phase was 11 1/2 to 1/2 in favour of the golfers.

The overall result of a most enjoyable competition was therefore a win for the Golfers by 12 1/2 to 11 1/2.

Miles Ellis, on behalf of the Bowlers, presented the Flint Trophy to the Captain of the Golf Club, Don Heathcote, but promised that the trophy had only been loaned to the golfers for a year while the bowlers got some practice in on the putting greeen before next year's match!

Later that evening, after a few drinks and an excellent meal in the clubhouse, a raffle was held to raise funds for the Captain's Charity. A total of £79.50 was raised in this way.
